The Passion of The Christ

You Can’t Prove God!
Many people including groups such as Atheists and Agnostics often say the most clichéd of arguments, you can’t prove God.

Before we talk about proving God, we need to understand what kind of culture we live in. One of the key factors of thought which determines many who oppose anything (not just Christian) spiritual is ‘rationalism’.

This was a product of an age called ‘the enlightenment’ when some influential philosophers, themselves products of major scientific breakthrough determined that science and religion were incompatible, in fact they claimed that science disproved the existence of God.

Rationalism is built on one vital thought ‘I only accept things to be true that I can understand and/or prove’. Which on the face of it may sound quite logical, if not a little arrogant.

This means that the things I don’t understand are either untrue or don’t exist.

Well let’s start with me, here’s a list of some of the things I don’t understand:

  • I’ve flown more times than I can remember and whilst I know the physics of it, I don’t understand how a piece of metal like that can get of the ground, or how it should?
  • I have several (yes, several) kids. I know how they came to be here, perhaps if I had known earlier I wouldn't have so many, I know the biology of the process. But how kids that look and think like me and who come from the 9 month  process and are not somehow messed up on the way is a miracle. In fact Dr Paul Brand a leading scientist has made that exact point, he’s amazed that most babies aren’t born with some defect when he considers the ‘miracles’ that have to take place for a baby to be born.

There’s two for starters, but I could go on all day, and to be honest those are the fun ones, but here’s a question for you:

Do you know your mother loves you?
I hope the answer is yes, now here’s another question:
Prove it!

Here’s another one, what’s your favourite food? Mine’s ice-cream.
Is it really nice? Yes!
Prove it!

I can tell you the scientific properties of ice-cream and how it works, but I can’t prove how nice it is! You see the things that we really believe, the things that really matter to us, can't be proved.

You may know every proof there is, although the truth is that science continues to contradict itself again and again, but only on the small issues like:

  • How the world began
  • Infinite or limited universe
  • Natural selection

As Christians we believe in science, it’s a gift from God, and did you know that some of the brightest brains in the world are Christian brains, unfortunately some of the most foolish people are scientists.

But coming back to the questions I asked you, you can’t prove to me anything that really matters to you and I doubt you will be lying on your death bed shouting ‘I understand how the world began!’ or ‘I know the formula for oxygen’.

You will want to have gathered round you the people who really matter to you. The ones who you love and the ones who love you… but do they? Prove it!

And the question we started with 'Prove God', that's one for you to do too!
