Love Doesn’t Envy

I remember a leading secular magazine once defined envy as “the pain felt when someone has what you want”. The Bible tells us,

“Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep”.
Romans 12:15

But why is it so much easier to have care and compassion for the hurting, than to be happy with those who have had a wonderful answer to prayer?

My understanding is that insecurity lies within the heart of many of us. We can so often be fearful and suspicious, which can result in the mistrust of one another. You see deep within us, there is often a cry that rises up when we hear about someone else’s blessing, “What about me?”. We can suddenly feel that God does not care for us after all and that He definitely does have favourites.

This of course is totally untrue!

We often fail to believe and understand that God has purposely made each one of us to be different, therefore our gifting, and calling will reflect this.

You see when we allow these wrong negative emotions to get a grip on us we are actually saying to God, what you have given me is rubbish compared to what you have given my fellow Christian. So, we are actually dishonouring God in who He has made us to be and what He has called us to do, and how He has uniquely gifted us!

I believe the answer is that we need to be rooted and grounded in the love of God.

“That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the Saints what is the width and length and depth and height-to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
Ephesians 3:17-19

May we by God’s grace be happy with who we are in Christ. Let us continue to pursue the love of God, which of course will take us a lifetime! The more we know and experience His love deep inside then the more envy will loosen its tight grip upon us.

So remember this, next time you feel the ugly monster of envy rising up within your heart, remind yourself that you are deeply loved by God, and that you will not miss out on His blessing, guidance, gifting and purpose for your life.
